FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Andrew Scheer, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement to mark World Refugee Day:
“Today marks World Refugee Day, an occasion to reflect upon one of the most significant challenges facing humanity. Persecution, instability, and many other causes have caused countless people, including children, to be forced out of their homes and into the unknown. In undertaking this difficult journey, they all seek to live in peace and to rebuild their lives for a better future for themselves and their families.
“Canada continues to be a beacon of hope and a land of refuge for hundreds of thousands of refugees fleeing from the threat of violence, horrific persecution and oppression in countries that they once called home. Conservatives have a long history of supporting the world’s most vulnerable and we will continue to fight for a more just and equal world.
“Every year, Canadians open their homes and communities to refugees from around the world, welcoming them in the true Canadian spirit. As a result, Canada is multicultural home to many successfully resettled communities that contribute immensely to our country.
“Today on World Refugee Day, we remember the hardship refugees around the world, and celebrate Canada as a country where so many have found peace and freedom.”
